Winter 2023/24

“Every age has its own outlook. It is specially good at seeing certain truths and specially liable to make certain mistakes. We all, therefore, need the books that will correct the characteristic mistakes of our own period. And that means the old books.”
C.S. Lewis, God in the Dock

“Affection is responsible for nine-tenths of whatever solid and durable happiness there is in our natural lives.”
C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

“I think that if God forgives us we must forgive ourselves. Otherwise it is almost like setting up ourselves as a higher tribunal than Him.”
C.S. Lewis, Letters (9 April 1951)

“Nothing, not even what is lowest and most bestial, will not be raised again if it submits to death.”
C.S. Lewis, The Great Divorce (Chapter 11)

“Maritain, Brann, & Raphael: Seeking Bridges to Beauty in Art”

From the Imaginative Conservative, May 22, 2023
Beauty is found in art when there is connectedness to something beyond novelty and originality. This connectedness must exist between the artist and the source of what inspires the particular medium of art.

“Art, like morality, consists of drawing the line somewhere.”

“Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it.”

These quotations, the first by G.K. Chesterton, and the second by C.S. Lewis, illumine an argument concerning art and beauty. This argument would hold that beauty is found in art when there is connectedness to something beyond novelty and originality. This connectedness must exist between the artist and the source of what inspires the particular medium of art… [read more]
Paired with these wise words on beauty and splendor, Professor Yulo led a discussion on G.K. Chesterton’s Orthodoxy for the C.S. Lewis Society of CA during the month of November, 2023.
3. Famous Eagle and Child Pub in Oxford bought for renovation and reopening
Theonering.net Press Release (October 27, 2023):
“Famed pub The Eagle and Child, frequented by J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and the Inklings group, closed three years ago during the pandemic; but a new investment group plans to bring it back to life. Larry Ellison, founder of Oracle Systems based in California, has purchased the long-empty pub from Oxford’s St. John’s College. The Ellison Institute of Technology plans to renovate and reopen the famed pub, nicknamed The Bird & Baby, with a new restaurant, meeting rooms, and a new study area for students and faculty.”

4. Recently Published Books on Lewis’s Perelandra and his brother Warren’s Letter Writing
A. “In Mystical Perelandra, Como draws us into the mysterious heart of the reader’s experience, living within rather than merely analyzing Lewis’ literary vision. The result is alchemical, poetic, and mercurial, a narrative spiritual theology where we imbibe the transcendent nature of Ransom’s planetary journey through Como’s imaginative, sacramental, life-integrated, mystical experience as a reader. And we are all the richer for his efforts. Como’s reflections on Perelandra transport us, like Ransom, to a world of myth and meaning much greater than a book.” ~Brenton Dickieson (www.pilgriminnarnia.com)

Book Review: August 28, National Review, C.S. Lewis against the darkness
B. The Major And The Missionary After the death of his brother, Warren Lewis lived at The Kilns in Oxford, edited his famous brother's letters, and did a little writing of his own. Then he got a letter from a stranger on the far side of the world. Over the years that followed, he and Blanche Biggs, a missionary in Papua New Guinea, shared a vibrant correspondence. These conversations encompassed their views on faith, their politics, their humor, the legacy of C. S. Lewis, and their own trials and longings. Their letters paint a colorful portrait that illuminates not only the particulars of distant times and places, but the intimate contours of a rare friendship. (Rabbit Room Press)
