"C.S. Lewis, My Godfather: An Evening with Laurence Harwood"
Join Us for a Special Reception, Program and Book Signing with
C.S. Lewis's Godson, Laurence Harwood, OBE
Oakland, California • October 10, 2012
"With the passage of time fewer and fewer people remain alive who knew him as a living friend, and I therefore think it right and timely to record some of my memories of my relationship with the man and some aspects of his much longer friendship with my own father, with my mother, and his contemporaries throughout his life. It was through this friendship with my parents that C. S. Lewis became my godfather."
—Laurence Harwood, OBE
This unique event will feature C.S. Lewis's godson Laurence Harwood who will speak about his personal relationship with Lewis from Harwood's childhood through young adulthood. In his presentation, Harwood will provide a rare and charming glimpse of Lewis in the setting of home and family and share previously unpublished letters, photographs, drawings, and poems that contribute further insight into the author of The Chronicles of Narnia, The Screwtape Letters, Mere Christianity, and dozens of other beloved books.
Harwood's book C.S. Lewis, My Godfather is a touching, personal portrait of C.S. Lewis, the beloved Oxford don and Christian author. Laurence Harwood presents his memories and interactions with his godfather C.S. Lewis, spanning Harwood's early boyhood to young adulthood. The book includes letters received from Lewis, as well as memories of and letters between Lewis and Harwood's father, Cecil Harwood along with his wife, Daphne, who were two of Lewis's closest and long-time friends. Cecil was also an original member of The Inklings, the influential literary society operated by C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.
"This is a primary source of information about C.S. Lewis, and my admiration is unbounded. We may never see anything of its importance again."
—Walter Hooper, Secretary and Literary Editor of the Works of C.S. Lewis
